CARE AND PREPARATION – SUNFLOWERS (LOCALLY GROWN)
DIY Bulk Flower Guide

Locally grown sunflowers are hardy, long-lasting flowers that require standard preparation. Please follow these steps carefully upon receiving your flowers:

  1. Unpack immediately. Remove the flowers from the box as soon as they arrive.
  2. Remove outer packaging. Take off all outer packaging and protective sleeves.
  3. Minimal cleaning required. Sunflowers are typically delivered with most or all lower leaves already removed, so little additional cleaning is needed.
  4. Prepare clean water. Fill a clean bucket or vase with fresh water. Add floral food and stir until fully dissolved.
  5. Trim the stems. Cut approximately 1–2 inches off the stems at an angle using sharp floral shears or a sharp knife.
  6. Hydrate properly. Place stems immediately into water and keep them in a cool area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  7. Handle with care when placing in buckets. Sunflowers can be top-heavy, which may cause buckets or containers to tip over easily. Ensure the container is stable when placing stems.
  8. Stabilize with sufficient water. Using a larger amount of water in the bucket can help weigh it down and improve stability, especially during handling and transport.
  9. Daily care. Change the water regularly and re-cut stems as needed to maintain freshness.
